    Why You Should Never Skip a Pre-Purchase Inspection

    A buyer reached out about a car listed through what looked like a legit dealership. I called the dealership to schedule the inspection. They told me the person selling the car wasn't affiliated with them at all. He was a known scammer they'd already filed a police report on.

    That inspection never happened. But it didn't need to. The process caught it before any money changed hands, before any personal information got shared. That's the part people don't think about. Sometimes the inspection protects you before I even touch the car.

    What clean looks like from the outside

    A well detailed car can genuinely fool you. That's not a knock on sellers. Most people clean up what they can see. But a fresh wash and waxed paint don't tell you what's happening under the hood, underneath the car, or inside the computer.

    I've been doing this for 12 years. I come to wherever the car is, I crawl under it, I run diagnostics. The stuff that actually matters almost never shows itself from the driver's seat.

    Why I'm not your dealer's inspector

    Here's something most buyers don't consider: a shop that does inspections *and* repairs has a financial interest in finding things. That's not a conspiracy. It's just how businesses work.

    I don't do repairs. I don't work for dealers. I don't have any stake in how the sale goes. My job is to look at the car and tell you what I found, clearly, before you're committed to anything. If the car is solid, I'll say so. If there are issues, you'll know what they are. Walk away, negotiate, budget for a repair. That's your call.

    That independence is the whole point. It's why I built the business this way.

    I once got under a car and found an aftermarket electrical job where someone had wrapped the rear taillight wires around the exhaust pipe to keep them from hanging down near the driveshaft. That was their solution. Wires melting onto an exhaust manifold is a fire risk, and it told me a lot about how the rest of the car had been maintained. The buyer walked.

    When it makes sense

    Private sellers, used car lots, certified pre-owned. They all have gaps. CPO programs vary a lot in what they actually cover. I've inspected CPO vehicles that had issues the program didn't flag.

    If you're spending real money on a car and you haven't had an independent set of eyes on it, you're going in without the full picture. A lot of buyers don't realize they have another option before they sign.

    You know what repairs cost. The inspection is a fraction of that, and you get the information before you're on the hook for anything.

    One more thing

    I research your specific vehicle before I arrive: make, model, year, known issues for that generation. I'm not showing up cold and working through a generic list. When I'm under a high mileage timing chain or looking at a model with a known cooling system issue, that background matters.
